Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Deep wound, abscess, tissue, fluid, or where anaerobes are suspected.
Acceptable Specimen Type: Plates submitted in anaerobic conditions.
Container/Tube: Special anaerobic transport container (ESwab available from Rice Lab)
Sterile container: tissue
Sterile plain vacutainer tube: fluid
Collection Instructions:
1. Use anaerobic specimen collection system.
2. Obtain material to be cultured on swab (avoid contact with surfaces which have normal anaerobic flora, i.e. skin, gut, mucosal surfaces), or by sterile syringe and needle.
3. Follow directions on collection system.
4. Label container appropriately and include the time of collection and source/site of specimen.
Additional Information: Indicate the exact specimen site.
Specimen Transport Temperature
Anaerobic Swab/Container/Tube: Ambient ≤24 hours
Plates: Anaerobic incubation at 35° C (preferred)/Ambient ≤24 hours
