Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Nasopharyngeal

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Routine mini-tip swab
Acceptable: Inoculated agar plate(s)
Collection Instructions:
1. Use a swab on a soft flexible wire or mini-tip culturette.
2. Gently (without force) insert the swab through the nose to the posterior nasopharynx, allowing it to remain there a few seconds, and then deftly withdraw it. Try not to touch the sides of the nose.
3. Carefully insert swab into the culturette container and transport.
4. Label specimen appropriately.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Swab: Refrigerated (preferred)/Ambient ≤3 hours

Plate: Incubate 35° C (preferred)/Ambient ≤24 hours

Reference Values

No growth or normal skin flora

Identification of probable pathogen(s)

Critical Value:

Any Group B Streptococcus isolated from newborns

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus on inpatients

Vancomycin resistant Enterococci isolated in inpatients

Vancomycin intermediate or resistant Staphylococci
