Specimen Type: Plasma or Serum
Container/Tube:
Plasma: LIthium heparin, gel separator or K2 EDTA
Serum: Clot, plain, activator or gel separator
Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.4 mL
Note: Samples not tested within 8 hours of collection, remove serum or plasma from the clot, red blood cells, or separator gel.
Specimen Transport Temperature
Refrigerated (preferred) up to 48 hours/ Frozen up to 15 days/ Ambient up to 8 hours
Reference Values
Normal reference range 0.00-0.20 ng/mL
PCT <0.50 ng/mL: Associated with low risk for progression to severe sepsis and/or septic shock.
PCT >2.00 ng/mL: Associated with high risk for progression to severe sepsis and/or septic shock.
Procalcitonin (PCT) results should always be interpreted in the clinical context of the patient.
Critical Value: >2.00 ng/mL
