Specimen Requirements

Preferred Specimen Type: Urine, 24 hour

Container/Tube:

24 hour: Collection container (available from Rice Lab)
Random: Transport tube

Specimen Volume: 5 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 2 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Add 10 mL 5% (12.5 N) NaOH to container before collection.

2. Instruct patient to void at the beginning of the collection period and discard the specimen.

3. Collect all urine, including the final specimen voided at the end of the collection period.

4. Measure and record urine volume, date and time collected, and collection interval.

5. Aliquot 5 mL of well mixed specimen into a pour off tube.

Additional Information: 

1. 24-Hour volume is required for timed urine collection.

2. Adjust pH of random urine with dropwise addition of 5% NaOH to acheive pH >8.
