Preferred: Sterile container
Acceptable: Inoculated agar plate(s)
Specimen volume: 1 mL
Collection Instructions: Early morning expectorant is preferred.
Specimen Transport Temperature
Container: Refrigerated (preferred) ≤24 hours/Ambient ≤3 hours
Plate: Incubate 35° C (preferred)/Ambient ≤24 hours

Normal oral flora.
Identification of probable pathogen(s)
Critical Value:
Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus on inpatients
Vancomycin resistant Enterococci isolated in inpatients
Vancomycin intermediate or resistant Staphylococci
