Specimen Requirements

Preferred Specimen Type: Swab of throat

Acceptable Specimen Type: Inoculated agar plate(s)

Collection Instructions:

1. Use a sterile polyester tipped applicator in a tube (Culturette).

2. With the patient's tongue depressed and the throat well exposed and illuminated, rub the swab firmly over the back of the throat and tonsils.

3. Take care not to touch the tongue or lips with the swab.

4. Replace the swab into the culturette container, label properly and transport.
