Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Urine, 24 hour

Container/Tube: Collection container (available from Rice Lab)

Submission  Container/Tube: Plastic conical or transport tube

Specimen Volume: 5 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Add 20 -30mL 6N HCL to container before collection.

2. Instruct patient to void at the beginning of the collection period and discard the specimen.

3. Collect all urine, including the final specimen voided at the end of the collection period.

4. Measure and record urine volume, date and time collected, and collection interval.

5. Aliquot 5 mL of well mixed specimen into a transport tube.

6. Measure pH with litmus paper and adjust to a pH of  <2  using 6 N HCL.

7.  Urine can be collected without preservative if kept refrigerated.  When collected without preservative, the testing site will add 6 N HCL drop by drop to obtain a pH of <2 before testing.
