Specimen Requirements

Plasma/serum and urine are required. Plasma/serum specimen should preferably be obtained at mid-point of the 24-hour period of urine collection.

 

Specimen Type: Plasma or serum

Container/Tube:

Plasma: Heparin, plain or gel separator

Serum: Clot, plain, activator or gel separator

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. No preservative is required (10 g boric acid or 30 mL 6N HCL may be used as an alternative).

2. Instruct patient to void at the beginning of the collection period and discard the specimen.

3. Collect all urine, including the final specimen voided at the end of the collection period.

4. Measure and record urine volume, date and time collected, and collection interval.Container/Tube: Collection container (available from Rice Lab)

5. Aliquot 5 mL of well mixed specimen into a transport tube.

Additional Information: Total volume and patient’s height and weight are required.
